Cathy Burchett is a drum circle organizer and facilitator in the Kansas City area. Her first drumming lesson took place in Burkina Faso, West Africa in 1995, and she has continued pursuing the craft since then, studying with some of the finest drummers on the planet, including African Grand Masters Famadou Konate and Mamady Kieta She enjoys teaching students of all ages in her weekly African drumming classes, and has been performing with her students as the Djembe Djanes and Djims since 2007 at local and regional events including Breakfast with Santa (pictured above), the Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus sponsored Women’s Equality Week, MidAmeriCon II International Science Fiction Convention at Bartle Hall and WaterFire KC. Cathy leads drumming workshops at spiritual retreats and festivals including the Gaea Goddess Gathering and Zen Fest. She has performed locally and regionally as part of Djama, Celtic Moon and the African Drum Ensemble at KU (ADEKU), and has appeared onstage with Big Bad Gina, S.J. Tucker, Summer Osborne, Ginger Doss and Lynda Millard, Zanzibar, Making Movies and Ozomatli, and performed on CDs with Big Bad Gina and Wyatt West and the Urbanites.
